But the longer I use it, the more I realize just how much information can be connected to a Discord account.

Your profile can reveal details about you, your activity can show what you’re doing, other users can contact you, and connected apps may have access to parts of your account.

That’s why I think it’s worth spending a few minutes going through Discord’s privacy settings.

You don’t necessarily need to turn everything off. Personally, I prefer to keep the features I actually use while limiting the information and interactions I don’t need.

Start With Discord’s Data & Privacy Settings

The first place I’d recommend checking is Discord’s Data & Privacy section.

On desktop or in a browser, open User Settings and look for Data & Privacy. Discord provides several controls here that let you decide how certain information is used and how much of your profile other people can see.

Discord provides controls for data used to improve Discord, personalize the experience, and provide sponsored content.

I think this is one of those menus that most people should visit at least once, even if they don’t change every option.

Make Your Discord Profile More Private

One of the settings I’d pay particular attention to is Profile Privacy.

Discord allows users to control who can see their full profile information. Depending on the option you choose, your full profile can be visible to friends and server members, friends and members of smaller servers, or friends only.

This is useful because your Discord profile can contain considerably more information than just your username.

Depending on your settings, information such as your bio, badges, connected accounts, pronouns, status, and other profile details can be visible to other people.

Personally, I prefer the idea of limiting that information to people I actually know rather than automatically making my entire profile available to everyone I happen to share a server with.

It’s also worth remembering that making your profile private doesn’t automatically prevent people from sending you friend requests or direct messages. Those are separate privacy controls.

Think About Who Can Send You Direct Messages

This is another setting I wouldn’t ignore.

Discord can allow people in shared servers to send you direct messages. That’s convenient when you’re joining a community and meeting new people, but it also means that strangers in large servers may be able to contact you.

Discord lets you change this behavior through its privacy settings. You can disable direct messages from people who aren’t your friends, including on a server-by-server basis.

For me, this is one of the easiest privacy changes to justify. If I’m not expecting messages from random people in a huge server, there’s not much reason for everyone to have that access.

Check Who Can Send You Friend Requests

Friend requests are another area worth reviewing.

If you use Discord mostly with people you already know, you may not need every possible source of friend requests enabled.

Discord provides controls for deciding who can send you friend requests. The exact options available can depend on your account and settings, but the important thing is to actually review them instead of assuming the default settings are what you want.

I especially think this matters for people who participate in large public communities.

Consider Hiding Your Activity

One of the easiest pieces of information to overlook is your Discord activity.

If activity sharing is enabled, other people may be able to see things such as the game you’re playing or other activity associated with your Discord account.

That’s not necessarily a problem. In fact, it’s one of the features that makes Discord fun for many people. But I don’t think everyone needs to know what I’m doing every time I’m online.

If you prefer a little more privacy, this is definitely a setting worth checking.

Review How Discord Uses Your Data

This is probably the part of Discord’s settings that deserves the most attention.

Discord offers controls over whether certain account information is used to personalize your experience or improve the service.

For example, information such as the games you play, the people you interact with, the servers you join, and connections between your Discord account and other services can be used for personalization.

If you don’t want that information used for personalization, Discord provides a setting that allows you to turn that off.

Personally, I like having the choice. I’m not necessarily against personalization, but I think users should understand what these settings actually do instead of leaving everything enabled simply because they never opened the menu.

Don’t Forget Sponsored Content

Discord also has settings related to sponsored content and personalization.

If you’re not interested in personalized promotions, it’s worth looking at the relevant controls under Data & Privacy.

Turning off personalization doesn’t mean Discord suddenly stops showing every type of sponsored or promotional content. It changes how certain information is used to personalize that experience.

Check Your Authorized Apps

This is one of the settings I think people forget about the most.

Over the years, you may have connected Discord to different websites, games, bots, or other services. Some of those connections may still be authorized even though you haven’t used them in months.

I’d recommend going through your authorized apps occasionally and removing anything you no longer recognize or use.

There’s no real advantage to leaving an old integration connected to your account if you don’t need it anymore.

It’s basically the same principle I use with any online account: if I don’t need an app to have access anymore, I’d rather remove that access.

Be Careful With Connected Accounts

Discord can also connect with other services, including gaming platforms and other accounts.

These integrations can be useful. They can make it easier for friends to see what you’re playing or allow certain Discord features to work with another service.

But it’s worth remembering that connecting two accounts can increase the amount of information associated with your Discord profile.

My rule is pretty simple: if I don’t use the integration, I don’t need to keep it connected.

Don’t Overshare on Your Profile

Privacy settings can only do so much if you put sensitive information directly on your profile.

I’d avoid putting things like your home address, phone number, personal email address, workplace details, or other information that could make it easy for someone to identify or contact you outside Discord.

Even if you trust the people in your current servers, you never know who might eventually see your profile.

Public servers and public invite links can also make shared content accessible to a much wider audience.

Privacy Doesn’t Mean You Have to Disable Everything

One thing I don’t want to suggest is that everyone should completely lock down Discord and disable every feature.

That’s not realistic for most people.

Discord is designed around communication and communities, so some amount of information sharing is part of the experience.

Instead, I think it’s better to decide what you’re comfortable sharing.

Maybe you want friends to see what game you’re playing but don’t want strangers sending you DMs. Maybe you want your profile visible in smaller communities but not huge public servers. Or maybe you want to minimize personalized data use while keeping everything else enabled.

The useful thing is that Discord gives you separate controls for many of these choices.

My Discord Privacy Checklist

If I were setting up a Discord account today, these are the areas I’d check first:

Review Data & Privacy settings.

Check Profile Privacy and decide who should see your full profile.

Review who can send you direct messages.

Check who can send you friend requests.

Review Activity Sharing.

Look at how Discord uses your data for personalization.

Review Sponsored Content preferences.

Remove old or unused authorized apps.

Review your connected accounts.

Remove personal information you don’t actually need on your profile.

My Take

Discord has become much more than a gaming voice-chat application. For many people, it’s where friendships, communities, conversations, gaming activity, and other online identities all come together.

That’s exactly why I think privacy settings deserve more attention.

I’m not interested in making Discord unusable or turning off every feature. I just want to know what information I’m sharing, who can contact me, and which services have access to my account.

Spending five or ten minutes reviewing these settings is a lot easier than dealing with an unwanted message, an old connected app, or an unnecessarily public profile later.

My advice is simple: don’t just accept Discord’s defaults. Open the privacy settings, see what’s enabled, and make the choices that actually fit how you use Discord.

Your Discord account is yours.
